CNY Cakes & Goodies

Every year, Mom would bake her Signature Kueh Lapis and make Nonya Acar (Acar Awak) for our neighbors and relatives, and this year's no exception. Glad that the Bazaar we had last December got us some business for the Kueh Lapis, so this means Mom has to bake more this year!

Mom bakes them both in Hearts and in 7" Square. The Heart ones are usually recommended; perfect for giveaways.

Baking Kuch Lapis isn't as simple as it looks. It sure takes a lot of patience, concentration and effort. Here's an inside scoop to Mom's Signature Kueh Lapis...

Making Batter 1 with spices and Batter 2 without.

Now layering one at a time. It's baked to Perfection! Look how thin each layer is. Mom took approximately 4 - 5 hours to bake 4 Kueh Lapis.

I've yet to master this mouth-watering cake.

P/S - Orders will open again after the first week of CNY. Do email me at ashez87@hotmail.com if you wish to share Mom's Signature Kueh Lapis with your family and friends as well :)

Nonya Acar (Acar Awak); this dying tradition is another time consuming and tedious process which we all have experienced, and this year's probably my fifth year helping out.

We had to squeeze the cucumbers, carrots, cabbage 3 to 4 times. Fry the ginger and chili for 1.5hours. It takes about 2.5 days to complete this.

Every time we make this, Mom would tell us about her Ee Po, a Peranakan who makes really good Acar Awak. How I wish I had the privilege to have met her.

It seems that every CNY food item Mom likes take up a lot of time and effort. She used to make Pineapple Tarts in the shape of a pineapple by using cloves as the stem unlike those common ones you see today; either round/oval closed ones or open ones with the tart as the base and the paste on it.

Another dying tradition, Mom used to make Agar Agar which was passed down from my Grandmother. I sure miss these two!
